How and when would I prune a plant that flowers on current seasons growth?

How and when would I prune a plant that flowers on current seasons growth in summer or autumn to maximise the number of flowers????

Reply:Do not trim untill the thing looms and the blooms are dry..If you cut it now you won't have bloom......
