Can i plant flowers directly in deep mulch without having to go down into the soil below.?

The correct answer is yes, but the plants will not flourish.





The main purpose of the soil is to hold water for the roots to absorb. If there is nothing which can hold water, the plant will dry up. Because mulch is so much looser than soil, the water will simply slide right by the roots and they won't have the time to slurp it up.

It sounds like you have too much mulch. Only 3-4 inches of mulch is necessary.

There is a good chance that you would lose many of the plants if you were to plant them this way.





Many plants can ge stressed by this as they prefer soil to bark and wood and may have difficulties growing new roots.





There is also a problem with the plant being able to anchor itself in mulch as opposed to soil and the plant may fall over or move around, stressing it out and killing it.skin disease
