Is it too late to plant flowers for this year? Total novice - ideally would like colourful ones that would?

come up year after year but do not have a clue - first time having a garden.

They would be for the window box and plant pots originally - any help from proper gardeners would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Chrysanthemums are prevalent at garden centers now, and the will start blooming soon for lots of fall color. You can also find perennials for next year for 50% off or more. With a little planning, you can be ready to go with your garden next spring when everything starts growing again.

Reply:Its the best time to plant, its nearly spring. The daffodils are poking through now.
Reply:stillsearching has the best advice for your window boxes. For more impact try to get trays of polys or pansies that only have one or two colours instead of the technicolour explosion normally on offer. It's a personal choice thing of course but I like shades of a single colour. Don't be mean with the planting either, a common mistake is to dot the plants around. Use a good quality compost and put the plants in so no soil is showing then group your pots together instead of spacing them around the garden.

You could put some Hebes in your pots, they will be evergreen over the winter months and come into flower next year. You can buy them small now - less expensive.

Sarcococca confusa, also know as winter box makes a fantastic pot plant. It has small, glossy dark green leaves. The flowers are white, small and insignificant but the perfume will knock you out, it flowers in the dead of winter. Situate the pots by the front door so you get a blast of the perfume each time you go in or out.

Autumn is a good time to plant as it gives the plants a chance to establish in soil that is still warm from the summer (not that we have had much summer in the UK this year) before the dormant season and cold of winter.

Top tips - When you do start buying permanent planting for your garden try to remember to look for the final height and spread of the plants that you are interested in to ensure that it will not be too large for the space you have.

Sorry if I've prattled on a bit but i just love gardening.
Reply:depends on the area you are in, ask your local nursery
Reply:winter pansies are cheap and colourful this time of the year they dont mind the cold either
Reply:you will not get a summer bloom at this stage, but go buy Polyanthus and a nice bit of hanging ivy for your window boxes and pots for immediate colour now. You could add first some bulbs, snowdrops, narcissis (minature), which will pop up Feb/March. The Polyanthus (coloured primroses) will see you through the autumn/winter, and your pots will be bright and beautiful They can be bought cheaply. Good luck.yahoo finance
