Is it ok to plant flowers at the base of an oak tree?

Reply:It is not a good idea, as your flowers will need a lot more water than the native oak. Oaks do not need, or do well with irrigation. They are used to long, dry summers, and the flowers will not survive without lots of water. So, you have to decide if you want to slowly kill your oaks, or can do without the flowers in that location.





Oaks, being a native plant are adapted to the local weather, and if you water them more than once a month, they become succeptible to disease and rot. Once a month deep irrigation is okay, but more frequent watering can reduce the lifespan of that oak.

Also, do NOT rake the oak leaves up from under the oak tree! I know someone who did this and two years later the tree was loosing branches and dying. Don't dig, rake or water under oaks unless you want them to die. Seriously!





Plant your flowers somewhere else in your yard. Oaks are beautiful, cool looking trees.

Reply:it is okay as long as you get some shade-loving flowers. And make sure that you plant them where there are not a whole lot of shallow roots, otherwise you'll have some problems with them. I planted some hostas under a really large one that just has way too many roots near the top of the soil and they have not grown any bigger than about 4 inches this year. I guess they really don't like that....lesson learned. Another option is to surround the tree with some sort of edging and give it a little extra top soil or maybe some mulch that you can use to give them something to grab ahold of. hope this helps.Reebok
