Again I like Dr. Dirt's answer to this question.

The reason for spraying water on the plants in the evening deals with some basic science.

It takes a lot of energy to be released from water before it turns into ice.

My father used to use plastic jugs to hold water in and place it amongst the plants in the garden in early springtime.

The water would absorb energy during the daytime and release it during the nighttime.

Also, in the transition from it's liquid state to ice releases even more energy.

Since my father and grandfather always had competitions as to who was going to produce the first of any vegetable each year, they would both try different ways.

This idea seemed to work best, as my father would get the first harvest several weeks before my grandfather did.

He was doing this back in the 1960's and still uses the same system today.
Reply:If you don't have plastic you can use an old sheet. Be sure to take it off in the morning after the temp comes up.
Reply:just cover them with light plastic, put a few stakes in the ground then place the plastic over them and hold down with a few rocks, but take it of when the temp comes up.
Reply:crash is right--but don t let the plastic touch the plants--also you can spray them with water just before dark--it will form ice and be an insulting factor--we do this on our fruit trees here in Mississippi--by the way you know Easter was early this year--and this is the usual Easter cold snap--we got the same thing here--suppose to be 33 degrees come Wednesday it was in the 80 s all last week hope this helps byeaffiliate
