Can you suggest some flowering plants for my yard?

I have a few natural areas on my property that has trees and pine straw,no grass.I would like to plant some sorts of flowering plants.Perferably plants that bloom from spring to fall. Also I would like them to come back year after year.Spreading plants are fine and perferable as long as they are not to invasive. There are both sunny and shady locations.Looking for something that does not require a lot of watering or maintenence. The soil is clay type soil.If you can suggest some plants I would be greatful. Thanks.

'Stella D'Oro' variety will flower all summer (yellow)
Reply:As I was fed up planting flowers which would flower then die (and I'd have to dig them out again!) I discovered a plant called Convoluvus. Apparently they do come in other colours but I've only found the purpley lilac ones - they flower every single year (I think they die back when it's a bit cold though) but they can be quite invasive and take over a whole border!
Reply:hmmm, flowering plants all summer.......

Very few plants will flower all summer, most have a flowering period. You need to select several that have different flowering times so you cover the season.

Your best bet is the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service bulletins. Here is an example:

Reply:Jasmine, orchids, rose. Jasmine requires little attention and it grows well in sun. Orchids prosper well in shade.
Reply:The *Butterfly Bush* is a pretty plant, and it does draw the butterfly's(I had lots of Monarchs)
