With the exception of rainfall which we never know how much we are going to get each year, we rarely have to worry about freezes. In the past year, the few days we did get in the low 30's, it's easy enough to protect them with a light canvas (not plastic) covering at night. Geraniums seem to be very hardy, grow easily and provide color.

I would suggest either consulting the Sunset Magazine website which features planting guides and Bay Area Zonal information for plants and landscaping. Another resource is a trusted Nursery that can provide information (and merchandise) for what your looking for. Hope that helps. Happy planting from just over the hill. :)
Reply:dear, you do not have a "winter" in the bay area, it gets chilly perhaps, but things keep thriving and growing and the winos can keep sleeping in the parkspuppy teeth
